Founder, Who is Elijah
Roles in life and work:
In my day to day personal life, I am a mum to my one-year old baby boy, George and wife to my amazing Husband, Adam.
Work mode: Founder & Creative behind Australian Fragrance house, who is elijah. I wear many (all) hats in the business as we are still a young company, but I am so lucky that I have been able to build a successful and growing business. I love going to work every Monday!
What inspired your career change and move to fragrance design?
It was when I started to see my fragrances sell and be loved by so many people. I had to fund the start-up stage by continuing to work, but one day I just knew it was time to take the leap and I did! I always believed It was going to work because I was going to make it happen!
How do you go about designing fragrances?
I work very closely with a team of perfumers here in Sydney. They have taught me how to create a fragrance and a lot about the fragrance notes and how to blend them. There are a lot of courses and workshops available to learn how to make fragrances, but I knew from the start that I needed to work with a perfumer, it is an art and I wanted to learn from an artist.
Where did the name who is Elijah come from?
I actually started the company with a friend, and he wanted to call the company ‘Raquel & Elijah’, which I was not very fond of. After a short time, he decided he did not want to pursue the company and we split ways – it was honestly just a moment that I said ‘who is elijah’ (my friends name is Matthew, Elijah was never someone we knew, he just loved the name Elijah!)
What are you juggling right now in your life?
I wouldn’t say I have any real struggles right now, definitely the normal ‘struggles’ of having a very active one-year old boy. We recently had a hard week of extreme teething which involved sleepless nights for a week straight, and I was unable to spend much time at work – but family comes first, and we made it through!
How do you value your time?
Good question! Time isn’t always a luxury I find I have each day juggling my son, running my business and our household. Each morning I try to spend it with my son at a slow pace. He spends his day at Kindy most days and I remind myself that he is growing so fast – I must enjoy this time.
Once George is sorted and at kindy, I will tick off the most pressing work tasks I have prioritised, all before 4pm. In the afternoons I try to go for a walk and have just a little ‘me time’ – this is important! At 7:30 I am back on my laptop finishing my tasks for the day and planning for the next!
How do you manage your time effectively?
Prior to who is elijah, I came from a corporate background and spent 5 years working as an Executive Assistant to C-suite executives, this has made me very organised! I have everything in my calendar, a to do list is a must. Anything that gets thrown at me on the go, I will always send myself an email to remind me to action it. This has saved me more times than I can count.
How do you separate work and personal time?
Monday to Friday I am mostly work mode unless I am at home with my son. Weekends are for me and family time. I do find that I spend a lot of time on Instagram because it is technically ‘work’, but I am very guilty of too much screen time and needing to be more present at times.
What does your support network look like?
I am very lucky to have a very supportive Husband – he is a gem. I also have very supportive parents, and parents in law – we all live within 5 minutes of each other (babysitters a plenty!) I also have an amazing group of close friends that are always willing to help in any way they can.
I then have my small, but fabulous team at who is elijah. I couldn’t imagine who is elijah without them.
What kind of conversations do you have with your inner voice?
Oh gosh, do we have enough time to discuss them all! I will note a few;
When things are a little tough and aren’t going the way I had hoped or planned, I take a breath and remind myself how lucky I am to be healthy, live in a beautiful country, have a beautiful family and that all the rest are luxuries. I am always conscious of being grateful for the life I have.
On a daily basis, I think about and ‘discuss’ my goals with myself. I am a big believer in manifesting and saying what you want out to the universe. I have done this a lot in the last two years, and almost everything has happened. Honestly!!
Being confident in the choices I am making in my business!
Do you have any time saving tips for the One P community?
In terms of wardrobe tips, I suggest having your staple pieces that simplify your wardrobe. They never go out of fashion, and you can rotate your few pieces and mix/match and you know you will look fabulous.
In terms of being organised in general, plan out your days and leave time for the unexpected.
I am a lover and follower of ‘The Organised Life’ they have amazing Organisation tips and their blogs are super helpful and quite inspiring. I recommend checking them out!
What are you hints for using a perfume?
When relaxed, balanced, clean and hydrated, straight-out-of-the-bath skin is prime for spritzing. Take it one step further and lather up the body butter or moisturiser before misting your perfume all over – the extra moisture will lock in the scent an all-day (or night) long.
