Jen Pfeiffer

Wine Maker, Pfeiffer Wines

Roles in life and work:

I am the winemaker for my family business Pfeiffer Wines, Rutherglen, Victoria and for my personal brand Jen Pfeiffer Rock It Like A Redhead, which sees me responsible for all aspects of viticulture, wine making, bottling and packaging, marketing and business management.

I absolutely love my job.  I love that I get to do something every day that inspires so much passion in me, but also so much passion in the people who are consuming my wine.  What a thrill!

I am also a wine show judge across multiple shows in Australia, I am a wine educator to the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, Adelaide University and multiple community groups.

I am a partner, a daughter, a sister, a friend and the most fun aunty.

What are you juggling right now in your life?

I make over 50 different wines for both brands, so I am always juggling productions schedules, bottling programs and vineyard and winery improvement. I am also very lucky to maintain a great social network through the Naked Wines community, which all keeps me very busy.

How do you value your time?

I start every day with one hour of exercise, which is time purely for me. I listen to music and podcasts, or sometimes just the beautiful sounds of nature in the country and often let my thoughts wander.

Whatever I am concentrating on at the time, I try to give it 110% of my focus and attention – be it having fun with friends and family, trying to perfect my next Shiraz blend or playing games with my niece and nephew.

When I am not at work, I don’t like to be idle – I am much happier cooking up a storm in my kitchen, visiting friends or tending to the garden – even if this is all happening at a slower pace.

How do you manage your time effectively?

I am a highly organised and structured person.  I believe that good planning and preparation leads to better performance, so I always try to be well prepared and I never come to work without a plan.

I love a good list of priorities and I love ticking things off that list – I find it helps keep me focused and on track. I also love a deadline – knowing that we have a bottling date that I have to meet is a great motivator for me and my team.

Viticulture and wine making is very much governed by the seasons, so there are certain tasks that must be completed at certain times, which also helps create a structured working environment.

How do you separate work and personal time?

To be honest, the lines are very blurred for me. I grew up in the family business, so the business represents my childhood, my family and my career. It can be really emotional at times.

I used to live on site, which was tricky – moving off the property has helped give me some separation. I try never to bring my work home – I would rather stay a bit later at the winery and complete everything in my working environment, so that when I am home I can relax and enjoy a fine glass of wine with my partner over dinner.

What does your support network look like?

I have an amazing partner who has always supported and encouraged me in all aspects of my life. He is there holding my hand all the way and I couldn’t be happier about that.

I have a wonderful working team, who all provide me great support in my vision for the business – I would be lost without them.

My closest friends from school and university days are an incredible support to me – we have been through all our growing pains together and have come out the other side, we know each other intimately and love each other unconditionally, which is something I value very much.

And my family have been a rock to me – my parents have provided me so many opportunities and support over the years, to which I am very grateful.

What kind of conversations do you have with your inner voice?

Being a passionate redhead, I can be emotional, fiery and feisty at times, the redheaded gene runs strong in me.  In my youth, my passion certainly landed me in trouble from time to time, but as I mature, I have learnt to embrace all that emotion and passion and channel it to positive outcomes.

I am a real perfectionist when it comes to making wine, and am very driven to be constantly trying to improve and succeed. I absolutely love making wine – the combination of art and science, the reliance on the season, and the fact that no two vintages are ever the same. I also love learning about the technological advancements happening in our industry and how they can be applied to my business. So I guess my inner voice is always challenging me to push myself further, to try another technique, to discover a way to provide a better customer experience.

I always remind myself that desire, determination and hard work will always win the day.

Disrupting the wine industry to support talented independent winemakers.

In the beginning, Naked Wines founder knew the wine industry was broken and the two most important people – the winemaker and wine drinker – were getting the worst deal.

Naked Wines Australia was founded in 2012 to solve the problem and connect the maker and the drinker.

Naked Wines seek out hero independent winemakers and set them up for success by taking care of the sales, regulations and the back office admin.

In doing so, today, they continue to disrupt the status quo of an industry that is still dominated by the powerful supermarket duopoly.

Naked Wine Angel customers help directly support all their Naked winemakers so that all the maker has to do is make great wine that they really want to make.

Naked Wines then offer their wines back to Angel customers at exclusive preferential prices. It creates a virtuous circle where everyone wins!

Naked Wines supports some of the most trailblazing female winemakers like Jen Pfeiffer in a traditionally male dominated profession.
